The Center for Sex and Culture is proud to present the work of these two emerging queer artists who have broken away from the techniques and traditions of the great art of the AIDS generation. Both Hellu and Katz have struck out in new directions, addressing issues of identity, sexuality, personage, and history with a level of nuance and comfort that reflects the more integrated queerness of contemporary society without assimilation or apology.
Dorian Katz’s epicurean perversity permeates the animalized portraits of her friends and herself in black ink on white paper. Continuing from previous animal work as well as self-portraiture in character, she brings together sexuality and playful animal allegories with classical, religious, renaissance and other artistic influences and references.
Jamil Hellu, inspired by early portrait photography, presents his subjects actively sitting for photographs rather than captured instantaneously. His large format color work presents still poses through longer exposure times, slowing down the photographic act and forcing a meditative moment as part of his process.
